It took 21years for India to get a medal at the Olympics in weigh-lifting. Mirabai chanu won silver medal in the 49kg category. She won the first medal of honour to the country on Saturday 24th July, 2021. The 26-year-old lifted a total of 202kg (87kg+115kg). Karnam Malleswari won bronze medal in the 2000 Sydney Olympics.
Mirabai Chanu is also became famous for her Olympic earrings. It was a gift from her mother Saikhom Leima.
She faced failure in 2016 Olympics Games in Brazil, then she won Gold medal in 2018 in Commonwealth Games.
She is the third female athlete in a row to win medal for India at the Olympics Games after PV Sindhu and Sakshi Malik, who were India’s only medal winners at the Rio Olympics in 2016.
